School Spirit:

The Musical

Return to

SongTwo: Eleven (Love's Primary School Shoes)

From the very beginning of the musical it becomes clear that Casper has an interest in Chastity, the schoolyard beauty and older girl. He's stuck in grade five, she's almost royalty in grade six. Being the invisible nobodies that they are, Cody is convinced that Casper's got no chance even getting her to notice him. Casper, on the other hand, is more optimistic, and his song illustrates his eternal quiet hope that she'll finally notice him. One day...perhaps after Christmas.

This was the very first song written for the musical, even before I had any real idea of the major plot of the story. It wasn't until later that the cemetery and the spirits came into the drafts. Casper didn't even have a name at this point. I like to think that this song, then, is basically the whole heart of School Spirit, both the musical and the comic strip. It all started here.

The song is in 6/8 time and features a quiet guitar with flutes and strings behind it for a quiet, simple romantic feel to match the innocent theme. Cody sings the backing vocals in brackets.

Cheers.

Eleven (Love's Primary School Shoes)

There she is,
Playing with my heart strings again,
Picking a tune that sounds so sad to me.
Life is so hard at eleven.

Here I am (Here he is)
It feels like she's put me on the shelf (On the shelf)
With all the toys she can't be bothered with, (It's so sad)
But, after all, she is twelve (It's a cruel, cruel world).

Love is hard when you don't understand the rules.
What's a boy to do when he's found himself
Wearing Love's Primary School Shoes?

She's the one (Yes, which one?),
The one that I've been dreaming of (Oh, that one).
It's so hard sitting beside her each day (It's so sad).
Maybe she thinks she's above me? (She doesn't know that you're there)

Will she talk? (Not to you)
Perhaps ask what the answer is? (You don't know yourself!)
One day soon I'll get the guts to say 'hi', (But when?)
One day, perhaps after Christmas (That's a long time to wait).

Love is hard when you don't understand the rules.
What's a boy to do when he's found himself
Wearing Love's Primary School Shoes?

There she is (There she is),
Playing with my heart strings again (Once again),
Picking a tune that sounds so sad to me (It's so sad),
Life is so hard at eleven.
